Character World
Keeper's first home is the Deep Sea, the crushing depths of black where vision is not really much of a help. Closer to the surface, the MerCity of Nautilus once sat, a hub of merfolk of all different species. It sat in the confluence of many major points of trade and was ruled over by a mysterious mer who no one ever saw. This place is full of culture, art and learning.
Then a few years later, a trade tension between Nautilus City and some far off colony became a Trade War and then a real War and Nautilus City was attacked and completely destroyed by the invading forces. Some say there was something else pulling the strings-- but whatever the truth, Nautilus City is no more.
Character History
Character History: Keeper began in the crushing deep. He has no memories of anything but. He learned how to speak to the Elders and how to avoid them when they were hungry. He learned how to hunt, how to wait and stalk, how to know the songs all around him, and how to listen. And always he listened to the strange song in his heart. The yearning and pull for something else. Someone else.
After a century or so, as he matured into an adolescent, he followed the siren song inside. This lead him out of the crushing depths toward a thinner world of water, full of light and danger. Many times he was nearly killed and more than once had to revert to a pylop to regain strength and start again. Over a century later and he finally found the answering song, living in a shipwreck just outside of Nautilus City.
This was Aby, a clownfishmer who also had the same song. They took Keeper in and taught him many things. About who not to eat, about how to heal, about the surface world and humans and the role they played. Another mer named Ratana, a beta fish mer, came to join them-- living in the city but always a third to their little relationship.
Keeper was very happy. Even as the war brewed. Not knowing the concept he didn't think much of it. Not even Aby was particularly worried. Not as much as Ratana who could sense trouble on the current.
After Nautilus City was attacked, Aby and Keeper spent some time looking for Ratana, only to find no trace of him. Disheartened they went to help the wounded of the city and were set upon themselves. They managed to get away, but in the fight and flight, Keeper lost an eye (and a few tendrils) and Aby was severely wounded. So wounded that Keeper gave them to the humans in hopes the humans could heal them.
The humans took Aby far away and Keeper listened to the song of the heart grow fainter and fainter. Every day he swam near the shore and in the lagoon, hoping that Aby would be returned to him. And then one day the song it ended.
Even in the silence, Keeper remained in the lagoon for some months-- until it finally grew too dangerous and he left stones and flowers on the shore and went back in the water. Now he was determined to find Ratana. To help him if he could, or leave a memorial for him if he couldn't.
Character Motivation: Keeper is driven by two things. Food and Love.
He is a predator and his prey instinct is strong. He is almost always on the lookout for a good meal, though he almost exclusively eats live prey. Though he has learned to ask before eating (even if he might sample ahead of time), he doesn't see much difference between eating a fish, a merperson, or a human. This is mostly due to merjellies being a highly cannibalistic species. To say that his life revolves around food is a bit of an understatement.
Because of his primal nature, he is also motivated to stay alive and not become prey himself. A predator he may be, but he is only aggressive when cornered and would rather avoid a fight if he can. He also tends to hide if unsure and sleeps only a few minutes at a time when tense.
Keeper is tender for a merjelly. He is fond of children and won't eat them. Instead he enjoys watching them play and have fun and will add to that fun if he can. He will not even sting a child if he can help it. He will also not think of eating his friends-- or friends that belong to his Beloved (Aby) or his Beloved two (Ratana). He is very playful and happy with them and is very loyal. He is motivated to help them in any way he can and is starting to develop into someone more than just an eat or be eaten type of merperson.
Personality: Basically what's been said in the motivation section rofl. He's very primal and still in the eat or be eaten stage, but he's also very affectionate and playful. He's also endlessly curious. He doesn't always have words to describe things or experiences, but never shirks from trying. He will ask endless questions when given the opportunity. Though curious does not mean gullible. If he believes a foolish thing, it will only be until experience proves him wrong. And he knows what he likes and doesn't like and is not easily swayed by the latter.
He is also a deeply spiritual merjelly, a storyteller in song. He believes that everything comes back in time and that life and death and life is an endless circle. Though he has no concept of a higher being, he believes that there is something in the deep that connects everyone and watches over them, not to protect them per se, but to see them and memorize their songs.
Because of this, Keeper is very things are or they aren't. He doesn't have a lot of ego and is not easily insulted because what people think are what they think. The only time he ever gets truly angry is when someone threatens someone he cares for or mistreats them and makes them sad and will probably need to be talked down from this. But he is not difficult to talk down. On the whole, Keeper would prefer to be happy and have fun then be angry and hurt others. Though he can be very mischievous and will pull pranks that are funny to him, but maybe not to others.
Canon Strength/Weaknesses:
Strengths: Keeper is able to sting the dickens out of anyone (save for clownfish and creatures that are otherwise immune) in reality, he could very easily kill people. In the game however, he'll have to build up a charge. But still has enough natural "juice" as it were, to give people stings the equivalent of rug burns. Through the use of natural bio luminescence under his skin, he's able to shift it into patterns of colors and light to mesmerize creatures with a greater to lesser degree of effectiveness. This works the best on fish, but can also potentially work on land based creatures. Though reptiles oddly do not care.
Also being a jelly, he's able to squeeze into spaces that seem much too small for him. The general rule is, if his hand can fit, so can the rest of him. Though this will take some time depending on how narrow the space is. More than this he's impervious to poison and venom and most toxins.
Weakness: Keeper breaths through his skin and so, while he can survive out of water for a few hours, he can't do much longer than that. Out of water too he's pretty much useless. He can't move and and is basically a sad sack of jelly. (Though don't step on him or you'll get stung). On land or in water, though, he's very slow. Even when he's hurrying, people can probably outwalk him. He's always hungry for something and usually vocal about it and might take a while to warm up to people. He's also very focused on what he wants to be focused on. This could be annoying when a Mission is in progress and he's sampling every flower along the way and generally making a nuisance of himself.
He's also very weak in general. Other than his stinging cells his body isn't hard to tear apart or cut through. That and he's sensitive to pollution so while biotoxins and poisons won't bother him, manmad pollution will.
Apprentice Sorcerer Application
Class: Animal. While his form may have a human shape, most of him still runs on animal instinct. He's very primal in that regard and relies on intuition and natural skill rather than invention and innovation.
Element: Electricity-- This is not his nature. And he is terrified of thunderstoms. But a storm almost prevented him from bringing Aby the help he needed so he faced his fear and has faced every thunderstorm since even though he's scared.
